HTC HD2 fulfills its unboxing obligations on video

By Darren Murph - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

You’ve already seen the HD2 that HTC would have you see, but now it’s time to take the obligatory journey to the world of unboxings. Seen here in “not-yet-final” packaging, the WinMo 6.5-packin’ handset looks sexier than ever, even in that still-to-be-tweaked green box. Hop on past the break and mash play if you’re looking to get all sorts of jealous this morning.

Nokia’s first TD-SCDMA-based 6788 ready for China Mobile’s 500 million subscribers

By Thomas Ricker - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Nokia might be hemorrhaging smartphone marketshare to North America’s meddling upstarts but it still dominates in total handsets sold worldwide. Today’s news can only help that cause as Nokia taps into China’s homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G marketplace for the first time. The Nokia 6788 does the honor via collaboration with China Mobile, China’s (and the world’s) largest mobile phone operator. The handset itself brings a 2.8-inch QVGA display, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and dual-LED flash, 4GB of memory plus microSD expansion, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, all riding atop S60 3rd Edition — not 5th as we’re accustomed to seeing by now. Unfortunately, it won’t start contributing to Nokia’s sagging bottom-line until the end of December.

Sony Ericsson Equinox channels T707 flip for T-Mobile

By Chris Ziegler - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

The T707 has become Sony Ericsson’s gold-standard midrange fashion flip for 2009, and in light of the fact that T-Mobile USA has been turning a new leaf with these guys lately, it only makes sense that they’d want to bring a version of it onto the network, right? Indeed, the TM717 remix that we’ve seen in the FCC already has now been officially revealed as the Equinox, featuring a 3.2 megapixel camera, integrated FM radio, support for HSDPA, and a trick motion sensor that lets you control certain phone functions by waving your hand over the front. It’ll be hitting “select” T-Mobile retail locations plus the corporate website tomorrow, but anyone holding out until the 31st and visiting the grand opening of T-Mob’s latest LA location will have a chance to meet diehard Sony Ericsson fanatic Maria Sharapova (pictured, along with a T707) and participate in a lookalike contest. Conveniently, we were looking to go out on Halloween as Maria Sharapova anyhow, so this works out swimmingly.

Telus kicks off HSPA+ network with iPhone November 5th, HTC Hero, LG New Chocolate and more to follow

By Donald Melanson - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Telus already announced that it’d be launching the iPhone in November, but it’s just now gotten official with an actual date: November 5th — which just so happens to also be the day that it lights up its brand new HSPA+ network. Unfortunately for anyone hoping that a little competition would spark a price war, Telus is matching Rogers’ prices across the board, starting at $99.99 for the basic 8GB iPhone 3G, and moving up to $199.99 for the 16GB 3GS, and $299.99 for the 32GB 3GS (all on a three-year contract, of course). What’s more, Telus has also taken the opportunity to offer the first official confirmation of some of the other devices that’ll take advantage of its new network, including the HTC Hero, the previously rumored LG New Chocolate (a.k.a BL40), the Blackberry Bold 9700, and the Nokia E71 (plus a USB stick, for good measure). No prices or release dates for any of those just yet, unfortunately, but the Hero and New Chocolate are apparently Telus exclusives.

HTC confirms it has Android 2.0 handsets in the works

By Paul Miller - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Of course nobody expects Motorola and Verizon to be the sole benefactors of Android 2.0′s Donut-ey goodness in the long run, but in an age of increasing Android ubiquity it seemed odd to see them as the only ones with a more-or-less-confirmed Android 2.0 handset on the way. Well, Sascha Segan over at Gearlog did some digging and while Samsung wouldn’t confirm any Android 2.0 work, HTC was forthcoming in saying that it’s had Android 2.0 around for a while, and is working on it for future phones. Perhaps the HTC Desire (dubbed Droid Eris) or the Passion will be one of those phones? It would be odd to see Verizon introduce a 2.0 handset from Motorola and only 1.5 or 1.6 handsets from HTC, but we’ll just have to see how it all goes down next month — Motorola sure seems buddy buddy with Google on this one. But if Dell could track down a copy, we don’t see how far behind HTC could be on this one.

Sony Ericsson looking ready to come clean with Android-powered Rachael on November 3

By Chris Ziegler - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

It could be argued that Sony Ericsson owes the world some love after it built up its last event only to introduce a single, solitary A2DP headset, but we might finally get what’s coming to us in just a few days’ time. It looks like November 3 is the date SE has chosen to unleash the first volley in its Android strategy on the world, likely the XPERIA X3 (or X10, or whatever the heck they decide to call it) with that wild Rachael UI that we’ve been tracking for a few months. How do we know? Well, it does line up with the latest and greatest rumors — but more importantly, digging into the event page’s HTML source reveals several mentions of Rachael by name, so… yeah, that’s pretty much a lock. Should the unannounced Dragon and Sholes / Droid both be shaking in their boots already?

Samsung Moment review

By Chris Ziegler - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

In the world of Android, it’s not yet clear who’s going to come out victorious — QWERTY sliders or their keyboardless brethren — but does there really need to be a winner? We say there’s room for just about everyone in this open-source party, and Sprint is starting to round out its Android offerings by introducing the keyboard-equipped Samsung Moment to saddle up alongside the HTC Hero that was released a few weeks ago. In the scheme of things, the platform is still extraordinarily young which means that virtually every new handset that’s announced brings “firsts” to the table; in the Moment’s case, it’s both the first Android device with an 800MHz ARM11 core and the first Android QWERTY phone with an AMOLED display (you’d have to go back to another Sammy, the Galaxy, to find the first AMOLED Android phone regardless of input method).

Being able to stuff Android, AMOLED, QWERTY, and 800MHz all into one sentence certainly sounds like a winning combination, but does the Moment deliver? Let’s find out.

Verizon’s BlackBerry Curve 8530 gets reviewed early

By Darren Murph - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

The phone you’re peering at above has more names than we’d care to count, but the so-called Aries (or the Gemini‘s CDMA’d sibling, if you please) may end up on Verizon as one of two things: the BlackBerry Curve 8530 or the BlackBerry Curve 2. The folks over at CrackBerry managed to get their hands on a unit far before this thing has even been officially released, and of course they’ve given us the rundown just as the Storm2 is stealing all of the attention over at Big Red. The WiFi-equipped handset (yeah, you read that right) was said to be “identical to the Curve 8520″ with the exception of the back cover design, meaning that while solid, the device definitely felt “entry-level.” The interface was said to be satisfactorily snappy, the optical trackpad was dubbed “really great” and the web browser was still thoroughly worthless. If you really need to hear more, give that read link a look.

HTC Hero having intermittent text messaging problems?

By Donald Melanson - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

There’s not exactly much in the way of official statements on the matter just yet, but it looks like support forums have been piling up with reports of text messaging problems on the HTC Hero over the past few weeks, and with no signs of a fix in sight. Apparently, the phone can send texts just fine, but runs into a little trouble when it comes to receiving ‘em, with most folks reporting only intermittent problems, and at least some not receiving any at all. Interestingly, the problem seems to be occurring in both the US and the UK, so it would seem to be a problem on the phone’s end and not the carrier’s, and a few people seem to have had some (brief) success after resetting the device. Of course, there are also plenty of folks having no problems at all, but there doesn’t seem to be any question that the issue is out there. So, have you been missing some texts on your Hero? Let us know in comments.

Verizon chief says offering the iPhone is Apple’s call

By Chris Ziegler - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Remember how in grade school, you usually made fun of the people you had crushes on? Verizon — hot on the heels of some surgically strategic anti-iPhone marketing to promote its upcoming Android line — is singing a very different tune in the corporate boardroom, with CEO Ivan Seidenberg (who has a storied reputation for running his mouth) saying during the company’s earnings call today that the company “obviously would be interested at any point in the future that they would be interested in having us as a partner.” He went on to say that the decision to bring the iPhone to Verizon is “exclusively in Apple’s court,” though we doubt that’s entirely true — Verizon has a reputation for putting manufacturers and devices through the wringer, and if any carrier in the world were to spike the iPhone for failing acceptance testing or throw its gargantuan weight and reputation around to put pressure on the contract, it’d be Big Red. Either way, though, it’s an olive branch and a potential start to the near-constant cries of “if only the iPhone were on Verizon” that we’ve been hearing for the past two years; we’re still having an awful hard time picturing a CDMA-equipped version ever happening, but with Verizon’s LTE network progressively lighting up over the next few years, it might just be the perfect opportunity for these wayward souls to finally find common ground, especially with the tune AT&T’s singing these days.

Dedicated Android partner SciPhone brings N19, N21 to market

By Chris Ziegler - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

You’ve got to give these guys credit — SciPhone has been creating bizarre Android-powered devices of both the KIRF and original-design variety basically since day one of the platform’s existence, and two of its latest and greatest models are now available for purchase. Actually, attributing these two to SciPhone specifically is a bit unfair; the N19 appears to be a rebrand of that awesome Broncho A1 Storm KIRF we saw not long ago (shouldn’t they be copying the Storm2 now?) while the N21 looks like a dead ringer for the General Mobile DSTL1, right down to the 5 megapixel cam and dual SIM slots. We’d say “we’ll pass” without a second thought, but at $150 and $235, respectively, it gives you… well, at least a solid two seconds of pause, doesn’t it?

HTC Dragon coming to Verizon as the Passion?

By Nilay Patel - Last updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

We’ve been hearing about a 1GHz Snapdragon-based Android handset called the HTC Dragon ever since the HD2 came out, but now it looks like some pieces are falling into place — apparently this mystery HTC set we spotted over the weekend is a CDMA version of the Dragon headed for Verizon as the HTC Passion sometime in Q4. Apparently Verizon’s trying to unify the hardware UI of its Droid lineup, which is why the Motorola Droid, the HTC Droid Eris, and the Passion share a set of buttons along the bottom edge of the screen, and some people are also claiming that the white notification bar is further sign of similarity. As for us, well, we’ll wait to hear more before we start to get too excited — and we can’t help but wonder if this thing will run Sense or stock Android 2.0 when it hits, as HTC’s big new ad push is all about personalization. Still, it’s looking like a hell of a year for Android (and Verizon), no?

inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry up for pre-order, ships in February 2010

By Darren Murph - Last updated: Monday, October 26, 2009

Just as we’d heard, RIM decided to outsource the production of the planet’s first BlackBerry watch, but that doesn’t mean that devoted BB Messenger users won’t be hankerin’ for one. The inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry is being produced by Allerta, and now that it’s official, we can safely say that it’ll rely on Bluetooth in order to bring incoming emails, text messages and other alerts from your handset to your wrist (or your ankle, if you roll like that). As for specs, you’re looking at a 1.3-inch OLED display, glass lens, full metal body, vibrating motor, microUSB port and a rechargeable battery that’s good for around four days of “normal use.” inPulse users will have to install a special BlackBerry application in order to pass along information, but those hoping to use their watch to actually send messages will be sorely disappointed. It’s up for pre-order now at $149, and if all goes well, the first ones will ship out in February.

Palm Pixi on sale November 15 exclusively at Sprint for $100 on contract

By Darren Murph - Last updated: Monday, October 26, 2009

Just as we’d heard earlier this morning, today’s the day that Palm and Sprint come clean with their undercover plans for the former’s second-ever webOS device. The Pixi, which we toyed with back on our first Engadget Show, is slated to hit Sprint stores, Best Buy, RadioShack and select Walmart locations on November 15th for $99.99, but that’s after a $50 instant rebate and a $100 mail-in rebate that you’ll be waiting ages for. Nothing here is all that surprising — after all, we knew it’d be on shelves before the holiday season — but the $100 price point is downright depressing. The Palm Pre can be had right now for just $150 (also on contract), and beyond that, both webOS devices are being offered on the exact same network. Throw this thing on Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile, and you’ve got a whole new wave of Palm customers; as it stands, who’s really buying this with the Pre just $50 away?

MiFi gets new firmware, now stays on even when you don't need it

If you’re using one of the various MiFi incarnations, you may have been slightly annoyed at the thing shutting itself down after a few minutes of inactivity. It’s a lovely feature to save juice when running disconnected — a little less desirable when running on AC. There’s a new firmware in town and it does away with such bad behavior whilst also adding better compatibility with the Nintendo DS and BlackBerry Curve. It’s not an automatic update, though, so you’ll need to dig through some menus to make the magic happen, but we’re sure you can figure it out. (If you get stuck, the read link has pictures.)

iPhone 3GS coming to Orange UK on November 10

By Vladislav Savov - Last updated: Monday, October 26, 2009

So you’ve been lusting after that spit-shined touchy-swipey device from Apple, huh? If you’re in the UK, come November 10 you’ll finally have a choice of iPhone provider (both for 3G and 3GS flavors), with The Guardian confirming the date as Orange’s launch of the coveted handset. O2′s exclusivity runs out on the ninth of that month, but we shouldn’t be too quick to rejoice, as Orange will seek to “add value” rather than undercut O2′s pricing. Independent retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U are also expected to stock the iPhone on behalf of Orange, and lest we forget Vodafone will be joining in with its own offering in early 2010. The CEO of 3 has also indicated a strong desire to bring Cupertino’s baby onboard, though that’s unlikely to happen before the midpoint of next year. So it’ll get cheaper, just very… very slowly.

CE-Oh no he didn’t! Part XLV: Symbian’s Lee Williams rips into Android, implies Google is evil (video)

By Vladislav Savov - Last updated: Monday, October 26, 2009

Strap yourselves in, folks, we’re about to launch the Mudslinger 3000 again and figure out if any of it sticks. Lee Williams of Symbian starts off with a few attack volleys relating to Google’s “fragmentation” of UI elements, and the resultant closed APIs being a nightmare to code for. With so many divergent UI elements and styles, he argues, developers would suffer, and the consequence would be a less vibrant app ecosystem. His major gripe with Google’s mobile OS, though, has to do with the pervasive “cookie-ing” of customers, which raises the specter of privacy concerns. When asked directly by our buddy Om Malik whether he considers Android “more evil” than Apple’s iPhone OS, Williams replied:

“I don’t view Apple as evil, they’re just greedy… Google, come on! When you have to say in your motto that we’re not evil, right away the first question in my mind is, ‘why do you have to tell me that?’”

All this must be tempered by the knowledge that Android is set to overtake large swathes of the mobile OS space, and some retaliatory trash talking is probably to be expected from the incumbent smartphone leader. Om does ask another sage question, in querying why Williams thinks companies are making such large investments into Android, and you’ll find the answer to that and much more in the video past the break.
