What is FreeBSD? Why would I use this instead of the GNU?
I’m confused. Are you saying I can replace my kernel with FreeBSD on my operating system?

You would use it for:
developing, servers, a more stable desktop environment, a complete system.
I use it and so I will give you some pros and cons on the system.
pros: as listed above, can be compiled to work exactly with your machine, native boot loader is small, emulation for linux and sparc binaries, more efficient use of ram than linux.
Cons: hardware support not as good as linux, requires more knowledge of unix, certain x86 binaries may not work.
It’s more stable than Linux.
FreeBSD is a system with it’s own kernel. Linux+GNU is another system+kernel. You can make a Debian+FreeBSD-kernel system but you can’t make a Linux-kernel+FreeBSD userland system.
Here is a link on howto install FreeBSD.
Install it on a virtual machine within your linux box.

My understanding is that FreeBSD is an operating system similar to Linux, in which I have no interest in. I know nothing of Linux, and I don’t care to learn. The software available for Linux as opposed to Windows or even Mac OS are far and few between. I imagine that FreeBSD is even worse. Maybe I’m wrong. I have an open mind about this sort of thing, but it takes some convincing.
