chrome os46 Google Chrome Operating System =]?
~ The Missing Link ~ asked:

“They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files”

Does this quote mean that they somehow are going to have a way to upload your files online for free? Or is that me reading too much into it? =]

Do you think this OS will be successful? I think it already sounds awesome.

Yes – this is known as “cloud computing”.

Google it.

Successful? No.

It will be of no interest to the mainstream user or business users.
Like all the other Linux based projects it will get rabid support from a small handful of enthusiasts and no-one else will care.

Basically Google chrome is going to be a base operating system built around a Linux kernel with the majority of the applications being web based.
If you are familiar with Google docs you will already see how this can work.
I anticipate that they will have an offline feature built into the operating system for those times that you do not have internet access but I have not been able to validate that.
Essentially for file storage Google already provides space for you in Gmail, Picasa web, Docs and more however the space they provide for free is limited but for the casual surfer is perfect. Power users can opt to add additional space to their Google account for a yearly fee.
The more web applications that become available the more Google Chrome OS will become successful.

Noting in this country is ever free. you are probably reading too much into it, but even if it is free, you will probably have to deal with some sort of advertising, or google will say somewhere in fine print that they have the right to read and monitor all data you upload.
