freebsd94 How can I download and install FreeBSD Unix read below for details?
dakdjaskdasdhaskdhash asked:

I have a i386 system and Windows Xp intalled in the C drive.
I don’t have any other drive that I can afford to lose data except for C.
But I still want to keep my Windows XP.
If I install Unix alongside XP, will I lose all the programs I have already installed in C drive?
Please give DETAILED tutorial.
And which one is the best for learning programming , Ubuntu , Opensolaris, or FreeBSD?
I have live DVDs of Opensolaris and Ubuntu 9.04, so can I install the actual OS from the live DVD itself, or is the Live DVD only for testing and I need to download the actual OS separately ?

If you want to be able to dual boot, meaning a boot screen appears and you can choose which OS you want to start, you will not be able to do it as you have it.

You usually made partitions in your hard drive, with each partition set for a different operating system.

Then you install the operating systems on the different partitions.

Since you have laready installed XP on drive c, your can get:
- another hard drive. Partition it properly and install the Operating Systems. Once upon a time, Windows had to be installed first, but I think they have changed that now.
- a program that will make partitions for you on your c drive, such a program is called partition magic.

For FreeBSD, go to this site:

As to which one is better to learn on, what are you trying to learn? If it is just the basics oof learning about linux or unix, then there should be no real difference between the 3 of them.

To find out how to install both linux/unix and windows, have a look at the pages from this search result, as they will offer information that would probably not fit in here:

If you did not know, there is a program called CYGWin which puts linux onto your windows machine. I do not know if it does the whole inux experience or not, but you could check that out as well.
