Probably the closest related field is bioinformatics. An annual conference is held at Stanford (CA). Become expert in aspects of the field that interest you. Start corresponding with people doing research that interests you. Express your willingness to travel. You will likely get opportunities. Take every opportunity to learn. That improves your chances of being able to contribute to an opportunity.
