It comes with software like firefox, a calculator, some games, a text editor, openoffice and stuff…
Don’t know what I had exactly after I installed it.
But it’s REALLY easy to install other software…

VLC isn’t installed by the way…
But it took just 2 mouseclicks to install it…

No, ubuntu does not come preinstalled with VLC player. When you install it for the first time, you can’t listen to any MP3 or watch any dvd. This is due to some legal problem. But you can easily download mp3 player’s from internet once it is installed like VLC player. It comes preintalled with Open Office, and a messenger to use your msn and yahoo id’s for chatting. It’s been long since I used it, better search on net a bit.

In Ubuntu. VLC Player and many other applications are available in the Synaptic Package Manager

If you are looking for a distro. that works ‘out of the box’ then I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 6 which is Ubuntu based.

Linux Mint 6 Release notes

Linux Mint 6 Download

You download the ISO. image of either Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

Ubuntu comes with lots of preinstalled Applications like Firefox,Burning Software brasero,Open Office,GIMP and many others.

VLC isn’t install by default.

You can use package managers like Add/remove or synpatic to install VLC.

Just search for any Application, and install it.

Btw, Linux Mint is ubuntu derivative, and just installs Codecs out of box, Which ubuntu does not due to legal restictions.

However, Just Install ubuntu-restricted-extras package from package manager to install all codecs.
