the core of a business plan is your verbal bit … what are you selling, why will people want to buy from you, and how many people can you reasonably expect to sell to?

so this partly about what you are doing, and what people want, and partly about how you will market.

when you know how much you think you can sell you can work through how much lead time you have (you have to buy things and pay for them, but the people you are selling to may take time to pay depending on who you are selling to.

these fundamentals are then the basis for your numeric analysis of how much capital you need and how the cash flow will work. I dont think any particular soft ware is required . you can do the numbers in excel to save costs.

any lender is more interested in whether you have properly thought through what your business is and what your unique selling points are.

While I agree with the previous posts about the verbal part, and using excel, it helps to have things in an organized manner. I’ve used Business Plan Pro in the past and found it useful for organizing all the information into one area. You can incorporate spreadsheets and other documents into the plan and print it all out in nice, neat detail.

As an accountant I’ve written quite a few business plans for my clients from new start-up plans to business expansion projects. The BEST software I’ve used was found on the internet and the Small Business Administration was among the best sites AND IT WAS FREE. I have found that to get the framework for hanging my clients’ information on is the most important thing. Since each client’s situation has been unique, it is best to customize using an outline rather than standardize with a canned business planning software product. I would recommend the same thing for you. Don’t spend a bunch of money on business planning software when a trip to the internet will give you a framework to build your style of company on and get you up and running quicker. Remember a good business plan isn’t JUST for your banker.
