What programs and/or software do most of the video game design companies use? Are they anything special or are they just standard?

Mostly I am curious about what 3D programs they use to create characters.

Typically:
A C++ compiler (most commonly Microsoft Visual C++) for the programming
A combination of Adobe Photoshop and MS Paint for the textures
Either Studio3DMax or Maya for the 3D models and animations
Not sure what they use for sound and music.
Pretty much everything else is handled in the game engine, which they either program themslves or licence out from another company who did.

im not exactly sure what they use now. but back around 2000-2004 they almost all used a program called 3ds max. it is a really good program to make models.
